Any one thing that can take a driver’s attention off the road can trigger an incident that leads to an accident. While most of these are completely avoidable, they can still happen. If a minor collision does occur, a driver should have these few tools in their car, just in case.

First Aid Kit

A simple first aid kit is your first line of defense for most minor injuries. In addition to bandages, antibiotic ointments, and other necessities, a modern first aid kit should contain over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin or Ibuprofen.

  • Antiseptic
  • Cotton balls
  • Bug spray
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Gauze pads
  • Bandages
  • Tweezers

Road Flares and Reflective Triangles

Keep at least 3 reflective triangles in your car just in case there is an incident that happens at night. Passing drivers will see the reflective triangles from a large distance, giving them room to move aside, even in poor weather conditions.

Another must-have are LED road flares. These powered emergency safety flares are perfect alternatives to incendiary flares, and LED flares reduce the risk of fire.

Foam Tire Sealant

Even minor collisions can result in flat tires. A modern tire sealant will help if tire damage is minor.

Most new cars come with modern tire-sealant kits instead of heavy spare tires. The new kits include a small air compressor and a can of sealant that can easily be replaced once used.

It’s worth noting that most sealant products have a 100-mile limit, so get that tired changed as soon as possible.

Jumper Cables

Jumper cables are a must-have standard for any vehicle.

Your cables should reach at least 10 feet and be coated with 8-gauge rubber, minimum.

The standard 12-foot cables work well enough for light to medium cars and trucks, but the heavier gauge is a better option.
